Introduction.
As part of the Middle Year Programme of the International Baccalaureate, I as a teacher wanted to experience what is a personal project. Before taking into the classes I want to experience and do a Personal Project. I choose "Terrace Gardening". You migth want to know Why I have chosen this topic. Well, the topic may sound simple but it involves so much of:
The project includes Terrace gardening, ratio of different soil materials, turing the vegetable waste to organic manure and water facility to plants with drip irrigation equipments.
Once, I complete my project I can model and implement for investment as a business plan.
For "Terrace Gardening" I can relate to the global context "Personal and cultural expression" beacuse the topic I have chosen can closely connect to the question "What is the nature and purpose of creative expression?". so, with this project I would enjoy my creativity and explore different ways to extend my interest.
1.01. What is a Personal Project
According to IB Personal Project is a project to develop your personal interests. It is to show the skills you have developed in the MYP, through subject and Approaches to Learning (ATL), and apply these skills to a topic. This project should be based on your interests and talents, resulting in a product or outcome.
According to me doing a Personal Project is a continous thought process, digs your knowledge and forces you to know more about the subject. The practical experiences sharpens your understanding, and skills.
Investigating
2.01. What is Terrace Gardening?
Also called a roof garden,it is a garden that cultivates vegetables, fruits or flowers on the terrace, balconies or roof of buildings, also called as a roof garden. The kitchen garden, a standard in every Indian household, has shifted to the roof due to constraints of space, and called a terrace garden.
2.02. Identifying a goal of my Personal Project
If you reflect your lifestyle your must be having some ideal time everyday or every week. During that ideal time you feel like do something different. People either learn a new skill, develop a new hobby or narture their body.
Well, each one would like to spend time in their own way. Some people like to be lazy, some do nothing or spend time on social media etc. Few people do not know how to spend or utilize their ideal time and end up in depression.
Like many people as I described above I also had some ideal time where I spent time watching TV or on some social media. After some time I felt vexed to continue the same routine of spending that ideal time. I posed questions to myself, what is that interests me, what do I like to do, what motivates me to continue without obsturction.
The answeres to my questions is something which is associated to nature, What interests me? is spending time with trees, I like to observe them grow, the colours of the flowers attract me and I feel pleasant watching them in the early morning. I admire the tiny buds blossming into flowers. The taste of natural fruits grown in our backyard are totally different when we buy from the super market.
I use to throw all the vegetable waste in the dust bins, I read in news papers and saw from few videos how can the vegetable waste turned into organic compost. This compost helps the plant to grow healthy and gives good output. With this thought I also comtemplated on making organic manure from the vegetable waste that we get everyday.
This is how I came to a conclusion, which have multiple advantages not only vegetation which is organic and healthy. Involves physical exercise, spending quality time on a particular interest and finally getting closely associated with nature.
With this project I can go further, I can make this as a model and put forward for people who has similar interest. I would like to take for investment and apply the same model who are in need.
Planning
3.01. Creating criteria for the Personal Project
Form:
Floweing plants: I had chosen all my flowering plants on the groud floor space that I have around the house, my morning coffee and news paper reading space was alloted looking at them.
Vegetable plants: I had chosen my terrace for leafy and other vegetables. The area on my terrace is around 400 feet.
Aquatic plant: lotus is water plant, I had chosen my groud floor Noth west corner area, so that it receives at least 4 hours of sunlight.
Materials:
Audience: Myself and my family members will be the audience.
3.02. Selection of sources and application of information
Through out the personal project I had to use a variety of sources to base my research on and to guide my path. I think that all along I had varied resources, which clarified certain points and srengthned my previous information. Research played an important role in my personal project since my knowledge about plants and water supply was minimal.
The first resource that I collected which helped me draw the path that guided my project, was different raw mateirals and their ratio. I got it through a video when I researched on different soils and how to do the potting.
One thing I learnt thanks to my personal project is that news papers and videos help us a lot. Particularly about plants we have plenty of videos and groups on social media they help us solve many problems.
There was a gardner who helped me, he shared his knowledge that black soil is good for aquatic plants and I see the out put. My lotus pond is the beauty of my entrance, I kiss them when they bloom with the sunrise. I enjoy seeing the busy buzzing bees collecting the nectar from the water lillies.
To my luck there was a group in my colony, who were looking for a machine to compost the vegetable waste, they posted in the watsapp group, if anyone interested in buying the vegetable waste compost. Some company had come to our colony and explained how to operate. There are many videos which explain the compost making at home. Basically, that machine helped me from the rot smell, vegetable waste was kept in a container and hygine was maintained at the back yard.
And finally I started planning my drip irrigation, I had to do little detailed research in this part. Measuring the area, how much has to be procured, installation and testing the water flow and pressure.
Here some physical effort was put which was one time, I was cool for the rest of the days as there was no effort involved for watering the plants.
4. Taking action
The main point of my personal project is to make my ideal time to a quality time, bring some new hobby to my routine and few benefits to me and the family. Once eveything would be in place, my daily routine would be like:
Usually, once I come home form my job around 4 in the evening. This is where I love to relax in different ways. So, I go arond my terrace garden and take the benefit of leafy vegetables. I also check what needs to be repoted particularly for leafy vegetables like daniya and fenugreek.
As part of my personal project I also created some models, which I posted in the social groups on watsapp. These models include the estimations for those who are interesed in terrace gardening. Since the objective of my project was to engage my self, may be this model will help people who have similar interest.
Global context: "Personal and cultural expression"
According to the IB in relation to the Global Context " Students will explore the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic."
I believe that my project reflects completely of this global context. Throughout the project, product and action I have created certain awareness and I have come to inform people how they can apply their understanding toinvent and create inventions that will impact people's lives. This global context is all about sustainable innovation and that is what I had showed. I think that I had demonstrated that we, as humans, have certain dependency upon evironment factors and in order to make our human ingenutiy shine we must take in account the environment first.
This global context joins discovering and express ideas, feelings, nature, extend and enjoy our creativity and our appreciation of the aesthetic. I know that everything I have done in this time reflects perfectly the intention of the chosen global context, I specifically chose this one because I believe is important that the we all should know to live in harmony. I consider that my personal time is properly being used with value and intent in it.
5. Reflecting
after completing this process I can say that I am proud of what I have achieved. The project had help me to think systematicall to make a model. I have learnt so much about plants and how to deal with them. I now know the challenges I can go through the stress I can work with, and that I am able to produce something in spite of the obstakles that stand in my path. I can now tell that I truly wish to make a change I can make it.
The most important thing that I have learnt during this process is the importance of taking care of the environment. I know that evey action has a reaction and therefore I must think about my actions wisely not thinking solely about myself but others as well, I am more conscious now of the fact that I live in a single planet with more than 7 billion people, and the resources in this home are for every one of us and the babies that aren't yet born.
I also learnt that we play a highly improtant role in the environment and since we are the creatures who are destroying it, we must be the ones who repair it. I have learnt that this problem, of an injured planet, affects us all and if we don't take care of the planet then, who will? we must take responsiblitiy for the consequences of our action and we must make sure that those consequences can be as positive as possible.
last but not the least, I have learnt that we can all make changes even though we don't believe it. Smaall actions build big ones. we can all work together, as a whole in order to create a better world. we can all contribute something: knowledge, experience, anything can help to build a better and connected place to live in. I have learnt that we can all make changes even though we don't believe it. Small actions build big ones. We can all work together, as a whole in order to create a better world. We can all contribute something: Knowledge, experience, anything can help to build a better and connected place to live in. I have learnt that it is not too late to start the change.

3.01. Creating criteria for the Personal Project
Form:
- Available area on terrace
- No of pots that can be accommodate
- Proper sunlight for the plant
- Water facility -for drip irrigation- to water the plants daily
- Flowing plants and vegetable plants
- Vegetable waste composting machine
- It helps the plant to grow if there is proper place between each plant
- Required sunlight, water and manure helps the plant to grow healthy
- Every pot should have proper holes for excess water to flow out other wise they rot and die
- Usually we get worried if there can be any damage for the terrace due to regular storage of water under the pots. Yes-The damage can occur in the long run like leakage of roof
- To avoid such damage we can use different methods
- We can use different models of stands or brinks to avoid storage of water and give plants an easy flow of water during heavy rains
Materials:
- Pot: I had taken Paint buckets, polythene bags, jute clothe bags for potting
- Manure: Cocopete, red soil, vegetable manure, Cow dung and neem powder
- Seeds: leafy and vegetable seeds
- Drip irrigation materials: Dripper,
- Vegetable compost machine: collect the vegetable waste, add some dry waste to it and some bacteria component
Audience: Myself and my family members will be the audience.
- Take care of the water flow
- Check for any fungus infected to the plants
- Spray neem oil mixed with some soap water when there is fungus
- And enjoy the benefits of natural and fresh vegetation for the home kitchen
